Humidifiers and air purifiers serve two very different purposes. The humidifier will increase the moisture in the air and relieve symptoms like coughing, dry nose and sometimes headaches. A "dehumidifier" does the opposite, it takes humidity out of the air and will help with reducing the source for mold, but generally does not affect allergy or bronchitis symptoms.

Air purifiers clean the air of toxins, odors, dust and other irritants that cause flair ups in asthma and allergy sufferers. If you are looking for the best value for your money, take a look at the Sun Pure SP-20C at http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/air_purifiers_for_asthma.html. This is the most effective stand alone air purifier on the market. When you compare the features and effectiveness of the Sun Pure SP-20C with others, you won't find another machine that comes close. Over 3,000 asthma and allergy sufferers can't be wrong.

If allergies/asthma are your concern, a dehumidifier is definitely not the answer. It will remove moisture from the air, but none of the harmful contaminants and particulates (dust, VOCs etc) that aggrevate allergies and asthma.

I am an occupational health and safety specialist and conduct indoor air quality investigations and my husband has allergies. I personally own an Austin Air Purification system and recommend them to my clients. They have a machine specifically for those with allergies called the 'Allergy Machine' that has a special combination of filtration systems designed to remove allergens from the air.

One filtration source alone cannot eliminate all types of airborne contamiants - the ideal solution is a system that combines two or more types. The Austin Air cleaner removes a wide variety of particles, sub-micron particles, chemicals, gases, micro-organisms and odors. This system uses a HEPA filter along with granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) which has the strongest adsorption power of any material known to man.

Unlike air cleaners that use electrostatic-precipitation or ionic generation, the Austin Air cleaners do not emit any by-products such as toxic ozone - beware of that. Ozone can be extremely harmful to your health. Austin Air cleaners use a 4-stage filter containing only the best proven filter mediums for cleaning the air. In every Austin Air cleaner, you will find Medical Grade HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance) and Activated Carbon addressing the most serious household airborne contaminants.

The Allergy Machine is a great product, and you would pick the larger or smaller model depending on the size of your home. It is an American product and sells for 299.99 but it has a 5 year warranty and works like a charm. Remember, you get what you pay for and some of the cheaper models only have a one stage filtration system (only removing certain types of contaminants - mostly particles in the air) or emit harmful byproducts such as ozone. I would check out this site if you're interested. Tell them you've been referred and perhaps you can get a 5-10% discount.
