If there is new carpet and new paint and it has been scrubbed and you are still smelling something then an air purifier will not help much. With all that activity the air in your apartment has been completely changed / replaced quite a few times. I would suggest you start with the a/c / furnace filters and any duct work you have.
You do not need an air purifier to remove the smoke smell. Check with your local office cleaning services, they will have a high power ozone machine that will blast the odor in one shot. Ozone is bad for your health, so don’t be around when they are doing this. An air purifier is to improve your indoor air for your continued health, but will do very little in this short term scenario that you are wanting. The ozone blasting should only take a couple of hours, then you are good to go. I hope this helps.
