What’s the difference between an air purifier and an air sanitizer?

  1. An air purifier will remove particles from the air, typically by size filtration and electrostatic capture. This includes most home air filters. Good purifiers will also sanitize to an extent by not allowing microbes to pass through them.

An air sanitizer does not purify the air, but it will kill microorganisms in the air. For example, spraying Lysol into the air will kill microbes that it contacts in the air. Lysol is a sanitizer.

Some devices do a combination of these. They will have an air filter (HEPA) on the front end to purify, and a sanitizer (Lysol or Ozone) to kill microbes.
