It won't change the sound at all but you will still gain a couple of horse.

It does nearly nothing. No HP increase. No change in sound. It just filters the air getting sucked into the engine.

To answer your question NO it will not drastically change the sound of the engine, and wont drastically improve Hp.

the two main things that make a car run faster is fuel and air.
to improve sound headers, exhaust and muffler is where your looking. changing the intake wont account for much if you don't match the exhaust. Getting quick air in and out is the goal.

and to gain hp it would depend on the intake size and pipe diameter changing these WILL increase hp, i can't say how much due to several factors.
however, keep in mind fully upgrading from stock to custom intake and exhaust may off balance your sensors and put you on "check engine" which will revert to "retarded timing" so if your going to fully do it do it right.
But just changing to a cone filter won't hurt, but won't add much either.

K&N filtercharger "claims" that they give lower restriction than a stock airfilter. I haven't tried it, but I doubt that it would provide a really noticable difference in sound or power, but maybe it is worth 3-5 HP or so on the top end wide open.

If you are a kid on a light budget, this may be one of the few choices for under $100.

Also under $100 would be making sure you got a good new set of plug wires. I like Magnecor Race wires, and I think ensuring a good clean spark is worth a few more HP than the K&N filter.

Performance air filters tend to make your engine make an air sucking noise when you accelerate. (not necessarily a good noise)

HP? Maybe +3-5 if your lucky.

If your planning on keeping the car then upgrading to a K&N filter makes sense.
They are washable and properly cared for they will last the life of yr vehicle.
The open weave design of the cotton filters do breathe and filter much better than a cheap paper filt.
HP gains wont be noticeable but if you make some modifications to the standard air box to basically open it up to the fresh incoming air you will probably get an air intake growl when flat on the gas.
