What exactly does an air purifier do and how much does it help?

  1. If you use an air purifier, you will not need to dust very often. There are electrostatic air purifiers, ionic air purifiers, and an air purifier that uses an HEPA filter. With the HEPA filter one, you will need to put in a new filter every three months or more often. The other two kinds do not have a replaceable filter. With the electrostatic air purifier, you just take it apart and wash the filter, dry it, put it back together, and it is ready to go again. So the electrostatic air purifier is cheaper to operate, since you do not have to purchase filters. However, I have an Oreck 2000 air purifier, which is electrostatic. It does seem to remove pollen, but it did not help my mold spore allergies at all. I think one with a HEPA filter would be more effective. We do not have one because a filter can cost as much as $80.

  2. It depends on what type of air filter you get if you want to take germs out of the air. Yes they keep the room from getting too dusty. They also take out smoke and pet dander. You replace the filters when they get dirty and can not longer clean your air. We have 2 small Holmes ones and we just got them but they really seem to be helping my allergies.

  3. Suggest you get one with an ionizer, it helps keep the air clean and also has a lot of health benefits.
As to which air cleaner is best I don’t know, but if you get one with a filter buy one with a Hepa filter..
