I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima and commute about 70 miles every day. How often should I change the air filter?

Installing a Cone air filter on a stock intake tube?
I am planning to install a cone air filter (those found in autozone) in the place of a stock air box of the air intake. But i am planning to keep the original rubber tube. Is that possible?
I know it will not give as many hp as the CAI… Will there be any problems such as check engine light turning on? Any help is appreciated…
By the way the car is a 95 maxima.
