If the AIR FILTER in my car is installed incorrectly, would the check engine light come on?

I’m trying to change my air filter in my car and it’s a tight fit. If it’s not positioned exactly correct, could it do damage to the engine and cause check engine light to come on?

Installing a Cone air filter on a stock intake tube?

I am planning to install a cone air filter (those found in autozone) in the place of a stock air box of the air intake. But i am planning to keep the original rubber tube. Is that possible?
I know it will not give as many hp as the CAI… Will there be any problems such as check engine light turning on? Any help is appreciated…
By the way the car is a 95 maxima.
