Air Purifiers

Which of the following are valid tax write-offs when itemizing?

Which would be valid medical expenses, and what documentation would be needed?:
-Advanced air filtration system (particulates, chemicals, hepa and activated carbon filtration) for allergies & chemical sensitivities
-Vacuum with hepa filter (a far shot, but worth asking)
-Home water filtration systems, shower dechlorinator and tap purifier.

Do fine chemical air filters actually work, and if so, by what mechanisms?

I live in an extraordinarily polluted environment, and right now, the cost of breaking my lease and problems associated w/ relocating now would exceed the cost of this very expensive air purifier.
http://www.airpurifiers.com/products/iqair/gc-chemisorber.htm
If it works, it’s worth the money (esp. since I have chem sensitivities & allergies, so I’d probably find use for it anywhere), but if it doesn’t, it’s a huge waste for a glorified hepa filter (which is what it’d amount to if the chemical filtration didn’t work).
So my question is, how exactly does it filter out
Sulfur dioxide
Formaldehyde
Carbon dioxide
etc.
I’d be particularly interested to know how it can seriously filter Carbon dioxide, since that’s so prevalent in the air, I’d think that any filter for it’d be worn out within a day. That one in particular makes me question the validity of the product.
The sulfur dioxide, formaldehyde, and particulates from deisel are all very important to me, since these are some of the worst problems in this place, wedged between a factory w/ high sulfur dioxide emissions and an expressway, in a building full of gas stoves and heat, aside from fireplace smoke wafting in from the neighbors on some days.
Can someone with some knowledge of how these advanced air purifiers work please explain this to me? Would I be throwing my money away? (Please note that this is not a small purchase for me, especially looking at the cost and frequency of replacing the filters)

Honeywell Air Purifier for Mold all Through House?

I live on the coast in a valley and my house has a lot of mold I suspect between the walls. He gets asthma issues nightly, and I have been having sinusitis and pressure behind my eyes, muscle aches etc. We are otherwise healthy, young and vibrant but since living here for 8 months, we have really been getting sick. Do you think that a Honeywell air purifier would help to eliminate the mold? What can we do? To live here is expensive so we cant just move and our jobs are here. What can we do to "tough it out" one more year until we move?

Air purifiers?

I was doing some research on the net regarding Air purifiers.
They state that ionizing the air is not effective.

They also talk about something called "hydroxyl radicals".

Anybody heard about this. Any opinions on a good air purifier?

My cat has just been diagonsed with feline asthma…..:-(?

I have a 8 month old ASH. Since last week, his abdomen pumps up and down rapidly 3 to 4 times a day. Since it usually happens after he eats and he hasn’t been coughing, I thought he has digestion problem. Anyhow, I took him to the vet today and they took an x-ray…and the vet told me he has feline asthma. She showed me the x-ray and pointed out "donuts" and white calcified spot in his lungs. I cried so hard at the clinic.

The vet prescribed Prednisolone suspension 3 mg/ml twice a day (1 ml each time) for a week then decrease to once a day then decrease to once every other day. She also prescribed Cyproheptadine 1 mg/ml twice a day as well. She is also doing a fungal screen.

Can any one who has knowledge about feline asthma or has cats with feline asthma share some of your experience with me? Does the medications prescribed sound right? I checked online and it seems like 3 mg/ml twice a day for a 9 lbs cat is a little too much? Does he need to be on medications for the rest of his life? What else can I do to make to help him? I just bought two HEPA air purifiers and changed his litter from pine to yesterday’s news.

THANKS SO MUCH!!
===============================

Thank you so much JC for sharing your experience with me! He started the medicine last night and I am still watching for any improvement.

My cat has been on Hills Science Diet Nature’s Best Dry Kitten Food and Natural Balance Ultra Premium. I added Royal Canin Kitten 36 to his diet last month and it seems like it triggers the asthma but I am not sure.

I have been trying to switch him to can food (tried Wellness, Hills, Nutro) a few times but he just didn’t want it. Do you have any suggestions and tricks?

What is the best inexpensive air purifier/cleaner?

I’m looking for something to take care of dust - a dust magnet… We don’t have any alleries but we have plenty of dust…We’ve tried fancy furnace filters, mopping(we’re mainly hardwood& tile) and vaccuming. We have an upright vac that uses bags…Maybe a better vac would help??? Maybe we need to get our ducts cleaned??? At certain times during the day when the sunlight shines through the windows, its amazing and discusting at how much dust there is in our house…Its just two adults, no pets…I’d say we’re pretty clean people…lol. I’ve heard that some purifiers are basically a bunch of crap and others are rediculously espensive. We want something that sucks…the dust…My thought was maybe under 0 and hopefully rotate it around the house every day or so…? 1200 sq ft house plus full finished basement w/ area rugs. Btw, there is no dust in the basement - less activity and only two ducts..& one cold air return duct. Hmm. Anyway, like I said , I just want to get rid of the dust

My 4.5 year old son has dry eczema. What helps the chronic itch?

He’s very itchy & he often gets short tempered from it. He’s allergic to dust mites, pollen, mold, rice, corn, soy, & egg. I bought a Hepa filter vacuum, encased his bedding to keep dust mites away, run air purifiers, change the furnace filter frequently, use fragrance free detergents, run clothes through a second rinse cycle, use no dryer sheets, keep baths tepid & brief, lotion with Eucerin immediately afterward, & have him wear only cotton clothes. I can honestly say NONE of this has made a difference. He starts Kindergarten in the Fall & I worry about him. How can he concentrate if he’s itchy? Keeping my child drugged on Benadryl indefinitely isn’t an option to me. I currently started him on probitotics with his allergists approval & give him 2 tsp. ground Flaxseed in his cereal every morning. I’m now trying Emu oil on him. I spend all my free time searching for answers. Has anyone found relief from dry eczema? Perhaps a Homeopathic Dr. is my next step. Thank you in advance for any help!

What is the best air purifier for cat hair & dust? I HAVE NO ALLERGIES.?

My apartment is 883 sq feet. I have 5 cats and there are lots of trees around the complex. I am not allergic to dust, tree or flower pollen or anything like that. My problem is all the freaking cat hair that ends up resting on my stuff and also all the general dust. The cat hair issue extends to where when I walk outside, cat hair is floating in the air of my apartment &
ends up on my clothes………I have lint rollers in the car.

I need something that:
* Freshens the air
* Dramatically decreases the cat hair everywhere in my apartment
* Dramatically decreases the dust that ends up on my
electronics, book shelves, etc.

Any suggestions?
