It moves the air (generally across water), to cool the room. An ionizer helps change the air with negative ions. An air filter take dust particles (cat dander and hair for example) out of the air. You can replace the filter with 3M Filtrete material (sold by the roll at allergy supply companies) and then change that out every month. If you live in a cooler climate, though, you'll need something else for winter if you're allergic to more than just pollen, perhaps a small HEPA-standard air filtration unit. Ionizers are pretty much worthless. The EPA has issued warnings about them and Consumer Reports has pretty much thoroughly debunked any claims to usefullness.
