  1. One filtration source alone cannot eliminate all types of airborne contamiants - the ideal solution is a system that combines two or more types. I would recommend the Austin Air cleaner which delivers a complete filtration solution, removing a wide variety of particles, sub-micron particles, chemicals, gases, micro-organisms and odors. This system uses a HEPA filter along with granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) which has the strongest adsorption power of any material known to man. In one pound of carbon there are over 200 miles of tiny pores to trap gases and odors. It’s safe, cost efficient and so effective the military uses it in their gas masks!

Unlike air cleaners that use electrostatic-precipitation or ionic generation, the Austin Air cleaners do not emit any by-products such as toxic ozone. Austin Air cleaners use a 4-stage filter containing only the best proven filter mediums for cleaning the air. In every Austin Air cleaner, you will find Medical Grade HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance) and Activated Carbon addressing the most serious household airborne contaminants.

A great model, which I personally own is the HealthMate Jr which covers the area you have mentioned and is reasonably priced –With this machine, every minute, over 125 cubic feet of air passes through 6.5 pounds of Activated Carbon and over 30 square feet of True Medical Grade HEPA. It is slightly above your budget and sells for 299.99 but it has a warranty and free shipping is included http://www.thecleanaircompany.com/product_info.aspx?Pr_ID=2.
    Hope this helps.

  2. Apparently you do not want to use a UV light purifier, though it’s your
best bet; however the price the last time that I know of is around $300.00, though the price may have come down since then (around 4
years ago now). This is from athe Prozone Corp. Your next best bet is
Ionic breeze, though these can irritate the lungs, because, the ozone is coming from electrical static or from an eletrical spark and produces
nitrogenic gases that as said can irritate the lungs. Other than that, your guess is as good as mine.

  3. Your budget does not allow for an effective air purifier. If you are able to install a system into your central air system take a look at the Electro Breeze air cleaner at http://www.electro-breeze-supply.com/whole_house_air_purifiers.html. This will be as close as you can get to the solution with $295.00 out of pocket. If you are looking for a stand alone air purifier, take a look at the Sun Pure SP-20 at http://www.smoke-eaters-supply.com/air-purifiers-for-smoke.html. These units are $595 each.

The ionic breezes are ineffective and Sharper Image has already lost in court to prove this fact. The UV-C lamps will kill bacteria and mold but do nothing to clean the particles in the air. Cheap HEPA units are noisy and the replacement filters are almost as expensive as the unit. In air purifiers, you really get what you pay for. Take a look at the comparison chart at http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/compare_air_purifiers.html. I hope this helps.
