Removing the air filter or changing it for another will mean that the carburettor should be retuned. If you run it without retuning it, the fuel/air mix will be too lean and the engine will run hot. Adding unknown material could reduce the effect, but that would still be a guess. There's a bigger risk of engine damage from lean running than from material entering the combustion chamber. Does it even come with one? I suppose it would be ok, hoewver it will be sucking in any dirt in the air, which will / can cause damage to the carb. and/or eventually the piston / sleeve. better make a plan, even if it's just covering the box with a cloth.
