Run the air purifier with the windows closed. But If there is a time during the day or evening that you know the pollution outside is less than other times, then open the windows to let new air in. Close them, and turn the unit back on. Also, please make sure the air purifier you are running is large enough for the size of your house. For instance, small air purifier units are often not large enough to clean the air well. We have three Friedrich air cleaners (floor units), one in the common room, and one in each bedroom. They can completely clear tobacco smoke out a 12 x 14 foot room in under 20 minutes. But they are expensive (US $350-400 per unit). And we clean the filters often. Here is what I would do.
