The Ionizer is a small board inside the fan that receives an electrical current - Sort of a micro jolt of lightening.
What is does is produce, Ozone - It helps clean and sterilize the air in a certain area.
Good to use occasionally, but once you do, be prepared to dust the house. The "charged particles attract dust like no bodies business.
So go get a Swiffer 5 pack and be prepared.
I own two Straight Ionizers in our home, one upstairs and one down - it really helps keep the indoor air contaminate level down.
