You'd have a hard time claiming those as "medical" expenses. See IRS Publication 502.

You may deduct only the amount by which your total medical care expenses for the year exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. You do this calculation on Form 1040 Schedule A in computing the amount deductible.

The Hepa site says it is deductible only if your doctor writes a prescription for it.

I'm afraid none of them would. You also need to consider that you can only deduct medical expenses that amount to over 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.

Before you spend the burdensome amount of money to purchase this air purifier, not to mention that the cost of maintenance is as much as purchasing a new unit every two years, please take a look at the only other air purifier that is designed to handle gases and VOC's at http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/best-home-air-purifier.html Not only will you save money, but you will have better performance from the Sun Pure SP-20C. This is the same unit used in hospital labs for its efficiency and effectiveness. I found this video on YouTube of this unit in an IVF lab http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDDX_XWAcRY Take a look at the information on the website and see the test reports and the customer referrals. Good luck!!

Have you actually had the air in your apartment analyzed?

I doubt that I would purchase and use such a purifier unless I was sure that there were a lot of the pollutants listed as removable in actually in the air. There must be a lab in your area that could actually run a test on an air sample for you.

Since we generate a lot of CO2 every time we exhale, I doubt very much that removing it via a filter located across the room will save you from inhaling a goodly amount anyway.

I seriously challenge the ability to remove carbon dioxide and also the need in anything but a submarine. I would contact the company since carbon monoxide would be far more important to remove and is not listed. You also have a perfect right to ask them for a reference on how the chemical filters work, it shouldn't be a secret, just something new at the home level. I have no specific idea.
The material near the bottom states that the chemical removal cartridges take out 18-25 pounds which, considering the low absolute concentration of chemical irritants is a huge amount and supports the 3 year estimate for the most expensive replacement
I notice a relatively high power usage 195 watts when not in standby. This adds to the cost especially if you run it while you are out to reduce the irritants when you return, over 4 kwh per day. I assume you have already done what you can to seal your place to reduce infiltration under doors, etc.

Gases such as formaldehyde are removed from the air through adsorption (with a d). The most popular material used is the ubiquitous activate carbon ("activated charcoal"). The gas will cling to the material as it passes through. Activate alumina is another adsorption material that works better, but is more expensive. The other drawback is that these filters stop working quite quickly, especially in areas where they're doing a lot of filtration, and may have to be replaced as often as every few days, which is obviously quite costly.

Sulfur dioxide is removed from the plumes of coal plants through chemical "scrubbers" which use limestone as the chemically reactive substance (there are two methods, wet and dry, but pretty much the same thing). The limestone is the adsorbant, with the SO2 reacting with the limestone and "sticking." However, this chemical system is coupled with a physical screen to actually complete the process. It's not overly effective.

However, I don't think that anything you'll buy will remove CO2 -- CO2 is often considered to be the "safe" end product of converting some other pollutant into something clean and breathable.

I'd move.

Rent a steam cleaner and clean the carpet using white vinegar($2.50 a gallon in the grocery store) and hot water(25%/75%). This will kill any mold in the carpet and make it really clean. You might want to go over it twice and then a third time without pressing the trigger just to suck up the excess water. Throw your stuffed animals in the washer on the gentle cycle with laundry detergent and 2 cups white vinegar. Add 1/2 cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle and then tumble dry on low heat.
You might also want to wipe down your walls with warm water and vinegar. After everything is clean change the filter in your air purifier and you'll be fine.
A humidifier is a household appliance that increases humidity (moisture) in a single room or in the entire home. There are point-of-use humidifiers, which are commonly used to humidify a single room, and whole-house or furnace humidifiers, which connect to a home's HVAC system to provide humidity to the entire house.

Air purifiers are like vacuum cleaners in that they clean like crazy, but the source of allergens needs to be removed or reduced. You can buy the worlds best vacuum, but it still won't clean a dirt driveway. Opening your windows is like re-introducing all of the allergens that your air purifier worked so hard to remove. You have purchased the right type of air cleaner, but if you want the best value for your money, take a look at the Sun Pure SP-20C at http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/portable-air-purifiers.html It goes well beyond the capabilities of the Holmes air cleaners and will never let you down. It is capable of cleaning up to 2000 sq ft and also be suitable for a small room with its multiple settings. You can also just set it on automatic and forget it, since it is constantly monitoring the air in the room as it cleans. This is the same unit used in hospital labs for its efficiency and effectiveness as seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDDX_XWAcRY (just found this, we didn't record it). I hope this helps.

Your going to have to move sweetheart. If the landlord won't do anything, and the tenants don't care (4 people in a 1 bedroom?? thats insane.) there is just no way you will ever permanently get rid of it. Everything will just be a temporary fix.

Find a non smoking apartment. Or at the very least, look for a 1st floor. But be aware that 1st floors mean noise, noise, noise. Id take that over the smoke any day though.

Good luck!

Try an essential oil diffuser with peppermint oil. You may have to check around at some health food stores or places that specialize in environmentally friendly goods.
Can you change units when someone else moves out?
Unfortunately, sometimes you have to bite the bullet. If I were you, I'd hunt around for a better place and move when my lease was up. It's just not worth it.

Right let me first answer your first question - How much does a HEPA filters cost?

Now this changes between different purifiers. But most can cost between $30 - $80. You should also look to find out how often the filter will need replacing. Some filters can last 6 months and some longer.

I would recommend you go for a purifier that has a filter that you can clean yourself. With this type of purifier you just remove the HEPA filter and give it a clean or just vacuum it. Using a self cleaning filter will save you the money required for replacement.

Air purifiers are the machines that remove the dirt and HEPA filters are used by the machine to help them achieve this job. You will need to buy an air purifier but you won't always need a filter as some machines use UV light, ionization or even ozone to clean the air.

As you are looking to remove allergens from the air, i think a HEPA filter based machine would be best for your need. I personally find that the Sharp Air Purifiers- http://air-purifier-reviewsite.com/shop/category/sharp-air-purifier/ are extremely effective and removing allergens and don't cost too much.

A word of warning with regard to any walmart/cheap purifiers - don't bother! They rarely remove enough allergens to clean any normal sized room. Its worth researching different purifiers to find which one is best for your need.

Young lady, an air purifier is different than a humidifier your thinking of a humidifier get a air purifier I have a Parrot she is like my child, I have a Honeywell air purifier air cleaner get the one that you can clean the filters yourself with the vac cheaper than the one you have to buy them. Make sure your birds are not directly in front of the unit the breeze gives them draft chills, leave it on medium and you should be ok good luck

You are right to be concerned about indoor air quality with parakeets. They have very sensitive lungs and are more prone to respiratory problems than humans. The best air purifier on the market is the Sun Pure SP-20C at http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/portable-air-purifiers.html. It is the one recommended by Parrot Island for owners with birds. This unit has a hospital grade HEPA filter and ultra-violet for killing mold and viruses.

It appears that you may have been looking at the humidifiers at Wal-Mart. They come in cool mist and warm mist. They do nothing for air cleaning despite what they claim. I hope this helps.

Yes, they're 'air purifiers.' A HEPA filter means it meets a certain standard for filtering- 99.97% of particles at least 0.3 micrometers in size.

What you saw at walmart was probably a humidifier, which is different. An air purifier will not change the temperature of your air. Some water-based air washers do increase the humidity of rooms, but these are not mere humidifiers and are uncommon and extremely expensive machines.

The cost of an air purifier strongly depends on your specific needs.

One of the first things you need to consider is the size of your room and the CFM (amount of air pushed per minute) of the filter. As a general rule, if the machine you're looking at can't cycle all the air in your room at least three times per hour based on it's size, it's not really suitable for your room.

The second thing you need to consider is how much filtration you need. Some filters go further than the HEPA standard and filter consistently down to particles as small as 0.012 micrometers. They are considerably more expensive. If you live with pets, which can be bacteria producing, you can buy an air purifier with a UV light built in: air is 'washed' under the UV light before being sent back in to your room, killing the vast majority of residual bacteria.

You also need to consider the volume of a unit: some people are ok with some noise, while others want one that is near silent. The latter is usually more expensive. You can find out how much sound the purifier produces by calling the manufacturer, in most cases.

In general, for a typical room-size filtering unit, you can expect to spend 150-600$. You often need to replace the filter at least every three months, but perhaps more frequently depending on how much is being captured by the filter. This contributes to an expense of roughly 20-100$ per every three months. You also need to consider the added expense of electricity to power the device.

An in home purifier can go a very long way in improving your quality of life and your lung health, but they are a large investment for most people: research your options, contact the manufacturer, and find customer reviews, before diving in and buying a device.

How I can empathize with you! Had eczema and all the diagnosis' you received since childhood but have been free and clear of itching for almost 13 years now. Ocean water used to help me but eventually nothing helped and I just became worse and worse! My immune system along with other organs just became overloaded with medicines and toxins.

I went to a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and within 3 months was healed. My liver was toxic, I had parasites, and though I ate pretty well, I ate a lot of sweets and carbs and that made everything worse. Sweets or foods that turn to sugar quickly made the itching 10x worse.

First I did a complete 40 day colon and parasite cleanse. Then we rebuilt my systems and organs with colodial minerals, good vitamins, kelp to support my thyroid (which was causing the scalp to itch and the front of the legs to itch), took Essential Fatty Acids and Omega 3 oils, Evening Primrose oil, switched to all natural soaps and creams, put a filter on my shower head-got mine reasonably from www.waterproducts.com - and no longer use regular toothpastes, deodorants, shampoos, conditioners, or soaps. I buy as much as I can that has organic ingredients that I can read and know what the ingredients are. I use Aloe Vera gel on my skin and Vit E oil that is mixed with almond oil. I still have sensitive skin because that is just me but have clear soft skin and no itching.

The main cause of eczema is overreaction of the immune system. Identifying certain foods, chemicals, etc can be very helpful in battling this disease. I try to avoid soy and milk products which trigger my flare-ups.
After using number of prescription drugs I've turned to the natural treatments.
Now I use serenaskin herbal remedies , which aim at the root of the disease - the immune system, and are steroid-free.
After about 2 weeks of using ointment and spray my skin has been cleared up and now I just continue with eczema extract, which controls the immune system. My skin has been clear for months now.
It is the only treatment I have found that provides me complete relief when I use it as directed.

I can't believe no one has told you that you may have psoriasis. What you have sounds EXACTLY like psoriasis. If you google remember, the pictures may be different looking then what you have. There are several different types of psoriasis. There is no cure. Yes the tanning bed helps. Season changes affect me too. FLAXSEED oil capsules help. The sun helps. I would think that even if you put on sunscreen and went out for 20 30 min would make a huge difference. Eat right, exercise, stay healthy, and showering daily. This might be just me but there is a self tanning lotion called "hemp" or something like that you can get it at walmart, and for some reason it helps me. I think it may be cuz the first ingredient is water and the second ingredient is coconut oil.
Also when I was pregnant I was 100% free and clear of psoriasis. OMG it was amazing. Which makes me think it may have something to do with the hormones.....I wish I knew more about that. I have had it since 21. I'm 34. I have what they call "mild" but it's not the typical. I have it on my shins, forearms, scalp.
You should look more into psoriasis. It sounds very much like that may be what you have.
Stress will also aggravate it.
As far as keeping it at bay on your scalp, I will come back to my answer and go into detail, but I have to go pick up my son from the gym. I will update my answer before tomorrow....
mmmmmmk well can we see some pictures then??
It's kinda hard if we don't know what it looks like......

You could be suffering of a liver malfunction, and you should consider a meticulous analysis of your liver function by checking your liver pigments. This could probably be the cause of a weak immune system that put you in your difficult condition.
Your liver malfunction could be the consequence of some food that you are allergic to, like whey, or gluten, or sugars, including splenda or high calorie fructose syrup in different processed foods, or allergy to cheese, and other foods that you should check up with the doctor.

My husband was allergic to chicken meat and broth, while his sisters were allergic to beef. Every time they ingested such food, they had a lot of similar problems, even one week after having that food. A doctor helped them to find out about their condition, and now everything is fine, as they avoid that kind of food.

Consider drinking home prepared vegetable juice and fruit juice every other day. it could help your condition.

Sounds like an allergic reaction to me.I have something similar as i can't process my food properly due to illness. so my skin suffers from lack of something. My mother in law had that problem for years and the doctors didn't have a clue. When she died she had cancer throughout and i believe that the two problems were connected in her case

It sounds like you have been through hell and back trying to figure out what this is. To me from your description it sounds like eczema (but you've been told that before). A idea that probably hasn't been given to you by any on of your doctors is try vinegar as a treatment. You have nothing to lose from trying it seeing how nothing else has worked for you. If your interested read this article on eczema and vinegar.

Could you possibly have psoriasis? It often affects the scalp and it tends to wax and wane according to the weather conditions.

If you indeed have eczema, the important thing is to use a good quality cream to keep your skin moist at all times. If you have been cleared of a psoriasis diagnosis, it still might be worth trying coal tar preparations for your scalp and skin.

I believe you are looking for technology that does not exist. Whenever you stir up the air, like with vacuuming, the surrounding air moves to fill in the space. During this movement, the dust is also stirred and hopefully ingested by the vacuum. However, no machine is 100% efficient, so you will always have leakage around the hose connections, brushes and other moving parts of the machine. If this weren't bad enough, once you start moving the machine around, like you normally do when you are vacuuming, the efficiency drops dramatically. To add one more problem, even HEPA filters are only rated to 99.9% efficient down to 0.3 microns. So when you add up all the inefficiencies, you really are asking for something that is, so far, physically impossible to achieve.

The Dyson brand claims to be Asthma and Allergy Friendly certified, but if you look into that certification, you have to pay for it, so it is far from unbiased. We sell the Sun Pure SP-20C room air purifier at http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/portable-air-purifiers.html and they want us to give up nearly 10% of our profit to carry their sticker. We choose to sell to educated consumers who don't need to be told by paid advertisers who pose as some sort of consumer watchdog. I hope this helps.

In line with a previous answer, I believe you can ask your neighbor to extend the venting upward so that it is at point where the exhaust travels upward over the house and not onto your house. This may look odd, as a pipe will be attached to his home's exterior traveling upward. And it will be at a cost to him. But, I also believe there must be some local laws which will require him to do so if it causes damage or if it presents any safety concerns regarding you and/or your home. I'd check into the local building codes and laws and then discuss this with your neighbor.

You chose my answer as best one time. Listen one more time, please. You have asthma, the Orecks produce ozone. Ozone is known to be a lung irritant. I could fill this page with information about the perils of using ozone as an air cleaner. I could also fill this page with stories of disappointment with the effectiveness of the Oreck models. You must have a HEPA filter to clean the air. Ozone is good for odors and living bacteria, but even at that it does nothing to remove particles. You mentioned that you would consider the Sun Pure SP-20C at http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/portable-air-purifiers.html if you could make payments. You may not have noticed that you can purchase with a credit card without setting up a PayPal account. I would hate for you to continue posting on this forum when the real solution is quite available. Take a look at this page, http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/green-air-filters.html and it will give you an idea of how the different air purifiers work. Good luck!!

I can't recommend any air purifier under $50 that actually cleans the air.

Doubt you will find one (good one) for that price. Most are in the hundreds of dollars. If you do buy one, check the cost of the filters. They, too, can be very expensive. There are purifiers with no filters but they start at about $300.

Just going to tell you I've had *bad* experiences w/ Holmes & Vornado. Hunter was okay, could've been much better, & filter replacement cost was unreal.

My sister has an Oreck that doesn't use replacable filters. It is an expensive disappointment.

Sorry I can't help further.

Try to make sure that the stick rod is completely down. Mine won't work either if it is even a fraction up.Also, Blades have to be completely DRY. Make sure blades are in tight too.

I'll assume you are talking about a recent article that showed Ionic air purifiers are actually bad for you.
If so then yes. They produce Ozone. Ozone is great in the upper atmosphere where it helps block harmful radiation, but down here it is called smog. It is mot good to breathe. I am sure there are medical sites you could check to get truthful information, but for me it seems like common sense (Yes I had some in my home and now they are all turned off).

Both the ionic type and the oreck produce ozone, which is known to damage lung tissue. If you want to make a one time purchase, take a look at the Sun Pure SP-20C at http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/portable-air-purifiers.html. It is, by far, the best air purifier on the market. This is a one time purchase, which means you won't be looking for another air purifier for years to come. Most of the air purifiers on the market are stripped down to make them affordable or are way over-priced for what you actually benefit. This unit has computerized controls, so you just set it on automatic and it operates according to the air quality in the room. You set it and forget it. Another item to check before you purchase is the actual filter. You will find copycats of the Sun Pure unit, but none of them have a hospital grade HEPA filter that is more than 1/4" thick. The replacement kit, which is the HEPA filter, 5 micron prefilter and two UV bulbs, is good for two years at a cost of $145.

If you want to educate yourself on the different types of air cleaners on the market, go to http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/green-air-filters.html. I hope this helps.

If you still have the owners manual, it will tell you how to clean it. Usually, just a damp cloth will do. But if that doesn't work, use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. You could even try isopropyl alcohol. Just as long as it doesn't scratch or hurt the collector surface.

Mold requires moisture and air to grow, between your walls is not a likely place to grow, usually you need a damp, rotting, wet, leaking zone, black common mold can grow on many surfaces, if not kept properly clean, try the product Zep mold and stain remover, that will kill all mold.

The air purifier will not be enough. Mold can be removed with a 20% bleach and soap solution. The insulation and drywall really should be replaced. Start running a dehumidifier and clean all visable mold. You should not mess with asthma it can be fatal.
