An air purifier is a great idea but not a requirement. The purifier will help reduce the amount of ammonia in the air that is produced from rat urine. Of course it doesn't replace regular litter changes. Small rodents in enclosures can get sick very easily from ammonia. They will develop upper respiratory infection which are lethal to the little guys. An air purifier will not harm them, but will benefit them. It sounds like you have the best in mind!
