I have heard them to be called an air silencer… You may have a oxygen sensor behind your cat. converter… I had a 1988 Ford F-150, and that had one. I had to change it, along with some tube that went from the converter, to the engine. I believe it was a smog/pollution item. If you do have a oxygen sensor, check to see if you have that tube running from the converter to the engine. You may have it. And, you may not. When the tube becomes rusted, some people just take it off, and plug the hole, where the tube was. They also plug the hole where it goes to the engine. Again, some people do it. Some don’t.
